Adventure Racing Skills Clinics
Imagine combining mountain biking, trail running, orienteering, climbing and paddling
into one continuous adventure. All you need are a pair of sneakers and a bicycle. We’ll provide
the expertise so that you can learn the skills for success in adventure racing!
Adventure racing is the fastest growing sport in the United States, with over 500 races in 2007.
There are sprint races (a few hours), 24-30 hour races, and expedition races (a few days).
The world’s premier race, Primal Quest, will be held on June 21- July 2, 2008
in Montana. 94 teams from
every corner of the world raced 500 miles for up to 10 days non stop. Coed teams of 4 did each activity, whether mountain biking, mountaineering, horse back riding, kayaking, canyoneering, whitewater swimming, climbing, mountaineering or rappelling. We finished this grueling race in 9 days. Incredible images, maps, and leader boards are at
www.ecoprimalquest.com. Our regional
team is based near Charlotte, N.C.
Our Primal Quest 2008 Race Goal:
To race well as a team, be smart and safe and as fast as possible, and finish in the top 10. (We achieved the firs two at least :))
Our Team Mission:
To support the highest level of multi-sport athletic endeavors in the Charlotte, N.C. region.
So, why should you do an adventure race skills clinic or a short race?
- It will be fun! You can meet active outdoor people, potential teammates, and explore a beautiful local park.
It will be taught by local world-class adventure racers That only
means that we have goofed up many times. We want to share what we know so that you are safer
and more comfortable when you are on an adventure race some day! The most important skill is confidence, and that only comes with experience. These events are designed for anyone to finish!
- You will receive a written skills outline for essential skills: navigation, gear,
teammates, food, training, race preparation, race schedules, first aid. This outline
will help you determine everything you need to know about adventure racing. We will
also reference several great books. We want you to learn the essentials so that you feel
comfortable travelling in a less familar environment.
- You will do a short race so that you can gain confidence and overcome any fears.
The activities will include mountain biking, orienteering (map and compass navigation),
and paddling or rappelling depending on the location. This is NOT a race for prizes. We want you
to feel comfortable with the continuous nature of the sport. Anyone in reasonable health
can participate at some level. There will be experienced team members serving as guides
at checkpoints. We want you to have fun, gain confidence, then do a longer race some day.
- Discount coupons and door prizes from Great Outdoor Provision Co. and hopefully other sponsors...
If you can contribute some products call Doug at 704.895.6479
- These clinics are an opportunity for our team to support charity and create local buzz for adventure racing.
Our team will be sponsored when we raced in the world’s premier race, Primal Quest, June 21-July
2, 2008, in Montana. We finished in 9 days, in 37th place last time and we were 20th in the world
in 2004.
All of us are local racers, and we could not have competed without our sponsors. These clinics are one way for us to thank others.
- These clinics are an opportunity for us to share some skills and build a base of local athletes.
We want you to meet each other. There is no better sport in the world for meeting great people and
embracing challenges. There are larger numbers of athletes in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.
We want to develop such a group in Charlotte. Then we can all race together!
- We also want to contribute to charity. 100% of our profits will be donated to the American
Diabetes Association. We are racing for something larger than ourselves. We have family members
with diabetes and they need more money for research.
